Pokémon

Pokémon refers to creatures that inhabit the Pokémon universe, a franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori, and managed by The Pokémon Company. The term is a contraction of “Pocket Monsters” (the Japanese name for the franchise), and it encompasses a variety of fictional species, each with unique traits, abilities, and characteristics.

In the context of the franchise, Pokémon can be caught, trained, and battled by Pokémon Trainers. The goal often involves battling other trainers or wild Pokémon, completing a Pokédex (a digital encyclopedia of Pokémon species), and achieving personal milestones such as becoming a Pokémon Champion. The franchise includes video games, trading card games, animated television series, movies, merchandise, and more.

Pokémon has developed into a cultural phenomenon since its debut in the mid-1990s, spawning various generations of Pokémon species and evolving gameplay mechanics while fostering a dedicated global fanbase.
