J-Rock emerged in the late 20th century, primarily during the 1980s and 1990s, as Japanese bands began to adopt and adapt Western rock music. It features a wide range of subgenres and styles, often characterized by energetic performances, emotional lyrics, and diverse instrumentation.

Many J-Rock bands and artists incorporate visual aesthetics into their music, leading to a unique blend of sound and image often seen in live performances and music videos. Notable J-Rock groups include X Japan, L’Arc-en-Ciel, and One Ok Rock, each contributing to the genre’s popularity both in Japan and internationally.
